Ascent Trip Report

Starting at the Willamette River, which lies to the north of Skinner, I found a trail to the top which was blocked by many fallen trees. A sign told that it was closed due to a recent snow/ice storm, but it was easy enough to crawl over or under the trunks and branches. Just past a parking lot near the top, many others were hanging out and walking around a viewing area a short distance from the broad high point opposite the parking. I passed two pretty young women who gave me an unsolicited "hello," making me wonder if I was interrupting something bordering on the illegal. An alternative explanation is they were were just bored and wondering why be up here when the fog blocked all the usual nice views from the top. By the way, if you do drive up, you can pass a fairly large Columnar Basalt Formation where rock-climbers practice. An alternative approach is to take Amtrak and climb this peak from the south.
