Ascent Trip Report

After leaving from a friends wedding in Altoona, PA we began a LONG journey to drive all the way back to the Madison, WI area in 1 day (with 2 kids under the age of 4) OUCH!! To break things up we would be seeing 2 state highpoints on our way home. We would stop at Mt. Davis, PA and Hoosier Hill, IN. Starting out early in the morning we left the nightmare which was Knights Inn of Altoona. We experienced the WORST service we've ever experienced at that hotel so if you ever go through Altoona I would highly suggest staying away from Knights Inn. Our wake up call came 2 hours early (at about 5:00 AM) and we didn't realize until we left because they didn't put a clock in our room(!!!) (That was just 1 of several headaches there but I won't get into it all here). I guess we did get an early start though which helped us to get home earlier than we would of. We got to Mt. Davis in the late morning and had a few difficulties finding just where the actual highpoint was but eventually we got on the right road that brought us to the summit area. After taking our obligatory summit photos we headed up onto the observation tower to look out over Southern Pennsylvania. It was a pretty view from the top of the tower although from the summit area below the view was blocked. It was a nice break from the road but we still had Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin to go before we were at our beds. I think we got home at about 2:00 AM the next morning--but our beds never felt so good before! Home sweet home!
