Ascent Trip Report

We did this 9 mile RT hike on July 19th. It was unseasonably cool and a little overcast, which actually was nice, since we didn't overheat in the summer sun for a change. Bugs were minimal and we didn't even put bug dope on.

We started the ascent from Route 73 and took the Deer Brook trail alongside the brook. We then took the spur trail to the W.A. White trail, which led to the summit. The hike was fairly difficult; getting to the top of the "Wolf's Chin," only to realize that that wasn't the top was tough. Looking over at the next mountain -- and the col in between -- and realizing THAT was our destination was tougher. The steep scramble between the Wolf's Chin and Lower Wolf Jaw itself was very hard.

We took Elizabeth's dog, Satsuki, on the hike. There were quite a few steep spots where we worried the dog would slide down the mountain. We probably won't be bringing her on any more high peaks.

The summit itself is not bare, and views were minimal. We saw no sign marking the summit, but the trail signs indicting the distance to the next high peak in the range (Upper Wolf Jaw) were proof enough for us.

This hike took us a total of 8 hours to finish -- probably a sad indicator of how out of shape I am!
