Ascent Trip Report

Overnighted in the village of Strbske Pleso. Woke up to a gorgeous day and hiked down the road paralleling the tramway tracks to where it crosses Poprad Creek and then climbs toward Popradské Pleso. The road is an easy and pleasant enough wander but it's surprisingly busy with other hikers and walkers for a mid-week, late September day. I decided to snag one of the propane tanks at the trailhead and hump this to the hut - note that the firehose pieces used as backpack straps aren't the most ergonomic :) We followed the well-marked and straight-forward trail up and through forest which then opens into beautiful alpine panoramas. There is some minor scrambling on route that can also be done via ferrata. Given the dry weather it was easier and conceivably safer to avoid the chains and ladder pieces where possible. Once at the hut, I transferred the cylinder and received my gratis cup of heavily spiked tea, which was actually pretty lovely. We carried on to the summit where the most tricky part is avoiding the hoards of hikers, many of whom seemed to choose less-than-ideal lines up the summit block, so it's important to watch for falling rock from above in spots. Wonderful views from the very busy summit, and then headed over to the unpopulated North summit for a snack and to better enjoy some lounging around time. We followed roughly the same route back, but opted for the trail on the west side of Poprad Creek back to the village after Popradské Pleso - definitely more aesthetic as others have also mentioned.
