Ascent Trip Report

A friend from work and I decided to climb Pike's Peak. He lives in Castle Rock, roughly an hour north of Pike's Peak so I flew out on 9/20 and stayed overnight on 9/20 and 9/21. On the morning of 9/22 we departed his house at 5:10am arriving at the Barr Trailhead parking lot right at 6am. The lot was already nearly 100% full and we got the last parking spot. Setting out at 6:15am from the lot (elevation 6630), the temp was 56 degrees and it was still dark. The first 2 miles were quite steep before leveling out a bit for a short time. We met Kurt, a climber from Chicago around the end of mile 1 who joined us in the ascent. About this time the sun had risen and we had very good light.

There were mile markers each mile all the way to Barr Camp, elevation 10,200. Tracking our time, we were averaging 2.2 mph all the way to Barr Camp where we arrived at 9:15am. We took a 20 minute break here and ate our lunch and hydrated. Departing Barr Camp at 9:35am, we pressed on and eventually started breaking out of the tree line, probably about mile 8. This is just a guess as we either missed the mile markers or they weren't available past 7.5 which is the last one we saw.

The last three miles of the hike were probably the most brutal as the altitude affected us all differently along with the 3000 feet of elevation gain over the last 3 miles. Around mile 9, we encountered Jared from Bradenton, Florida who was taking a break as the altitude was affecting him quite a bit. He joined us for the final push to the summit. The 16 Golden Stairs were quite steep and made breathing difficult. Pushing through I saw the Cog Incline railroad train pull into the summit station.

I made the summit at 2:00pm for a total hike time of 7:45. Jared had a GPS watch and he recorded a total of 13.4 miles from the parking lot to the summit. Total elevation gain was 7480 feet. We took the 3:20 train on the Cog Railway back to Manitou Springs arriving there at 4:30pm.
