Ascent Trip Report

Latour Peak/ Kootenai County Highpoint were on my itinerary for a road trip in September 2006. I started in Washington and climbed Copper Butte right after a little snow storm dropped a few inches on that route. The next day, the 16th , I climbed Abercrombie Mountain and then headed southeast to tackle the mighty Mount Spokane. The weather was good and I made good time driving to Mount Spokane and enjoying the sights from that summit.

Since the day was going well I headed to Idaho on I-90 to see if I could find Latour Peak the highpoint of Kootenai County. The directions and Trip Reports I had from the County Highpoint Organization were right on the money and I drove right up to the saddle on the south side of Latour Peak. By now it was getting late in the day and I still wanted to get to the highpoint of Benewah County so I hurried up the trail.

The trail was marked with a post at the saddle, so I just followed it up. It soon became a path for ATV’s. It climbed pretty steeply up the side of Latour Peak. There isn’t anything on top of Latour except a view. To get credit for visiting the Kootenai County Highpoint, you have to tag both Latour Peak and Twin Crags since they are about the same height. From Latour, I followed the ridgeline down and then over to Twin Crags where the old fire lookout is located. I took a few pictures and headed right back down to my truck. This whole hike was only about 1.5 miles and gained about 560 ft. I was back at my truck about 45 minutes after I started.

It looked like I still had enough daylight so I drove a little ways along the ridge towards the Benewah County Highpoint before pulling off and hiking to the summit. That hike was a little longer, but it only gained about 300ft. I was back at my truck before it got dark. I had tagged 4 County Highpoints on this day in 2 different states. The next day I had my eye set on the 3 counties south of Benewah.
