Ascent Trip ReportStarted a Manker Flat parking area and hiked up the road to the 'Notch'/Mt. Baldy Ski Lodge. From there, up the very steep "Rollercoaster" ski run, a faint path up scree slopes to the top of Chair Lift #4 and the beginning of Devil's Backbone Trail. Weather up to this point was mostly sunny with rain clouds threatening to rise up from San Antonio Valley below.
As we began the trek on Devil's Backbone, the temperatures dropped and the wind picked up. Clouds began to move in, obscurring views up trail. These conditions worsened steadily as we made our way up the trail to the base of the scree covered slope . The fianl hike to the summit was in dense clouds, very windy and cold. We reached the summit after 3 1/2 hours of effort. Totally fogged in, we huddled behind one of the many manmade rock windbreaks and had lunch.
We then took the Baldy Bowl Trail back down to Manker Flat. Would not want to use that trail to reach the summit. Very steep most of the way. Total time up and back, 6 hours 15 minutes.
