Ascent Trip ReportFrom US-16 on the W side of Tensleep, I headed S on WY-434 for 20 miles to Big Trails. Zero your odometer where the road crosses a cattle guard and becomes CR-82. At mile 0.4 the pavement ends. The road beyond is well-graded gravel, suitable for any street legal vehicle. At mile 4.1 is a ranch entrance on the L. At mile 4.7 is another ranch entrance on the L, and a dense cluster of corrals on the R. At mile 7.9 is a ranch on the R, with a large 2-story white house. At mile 8.5 I turned L on CR-80, which is identified as Cherry Creek Rd in DeLorme. At mile 9.2 I passed the Crow Root Ranch turnoff on the R. The road climbs gradually into isolated tableland country. At mile 12.5 I entered a narrow corridor between fences. After this point, the land is often heavily laced with fences. At mile 17.2 the road fords a creek; a vehicle without high clearance may have trouble. At mile 18.2 is a bridge with a list of weight limits. At mile 19.5 I parked where the road topped out. Just ahead of where I parked, the road descends slightly to a saddle, beyond which is a forested hill. After that the road descends more steeply down a gully. In a valley to the R is a huge ranch; to the L are some rutted tracks up a grassy hill (and eventually to the summit of Deep Creek Pk, which is out of sight ~2 miles away). This is the turnoff very close to where the road crosses the border of sections 4 and 5, about ¼ mile SW of Point 7049. Although there are many fences and No Trespassing signs in the area, the road to the HP is unhindered by any access problems.
The hike was a straightforward walk up the road over open grassy hills to the S. For most of the distance the road parallels a fence a short distance to the E. Near the saddle ¼ mile S of Point 7330 is a fairly serious No Trespassing sign on the fence, but it's inconsequential since there's no need to cross the fence. At 7900' the road fades, and I continued straight ahead to the summit.
