Ascent Trip ReportOn a family holiday to the Cinque Terre, I took a day out to drive southeast to the northeastern appennine high point.
The drive was prolonged by the fact that I tried to drive there by a direct route over a high pass (Foce a Giovo) which turned out to be completely washed out beyond the Rifugio Casentini, The road is dirt at the best of times but in May 09 was passable only with a serious 4WD (ie Toyota Land Cruiser type, not BMW X5 or similar due to very high clearance needed to get over the boulder field remaining.
After the detour I started out from Fiumalbo with a 1:200K road map and the description from Petter Bjorstad's website (see http://www.ii.uib.no/~petter/mountains.html). The ascent is very straightforward although some old hard snow on teh ridge, and a biting wind made it feel more like March than May in central Italy
