Ascent Trip Report

Hiked a section of the GR531 along the crest of the Vosges from the Col de Bramont to La Grand Ventron and back along the Route Forestier on the West side. The summit of L´Altenberg is slightly off route but easy to reach through light brush from the highpoint of the GR531 between the Col de Bramont and the Col de Pourri Faing. There is a good view point across the valley just below the summit. The rest of the hike was quite simple and the Chaume de Ventron restaurant offers lunch, coffee and beer at the halfway point for those in need.

During the hike I surveyed the hight of the key Col for L´Altenberg, the Col de Bockloch since there is no spot height, even on the 1:25K mapping. I made multiple back and forward trips to the nearby spot height at a forest road junction, and checked 3 different low points on the up and down col. The southernmost of the 3 is the lowest at 1014m, giving L´Altenberg a prominence of 183m. The accuracy, using my altimeter, is probably quite good since the horizontal distance was only 200m and the repeatability was exact each time (steady pressure day).
