Ascent Trip Report

Spotting the surprisingly white Lake District mountains from a distance, Per and I quickly decided to buy crampons in Ambleside (where we also stayed for two nights, at the nice Thorneyfield Guest House). The crampons turned out to be harder to get hold of than we expected – supposedly because none of the stores expected any customer demand for such a product this late in the year – but made the climb much more fun (as well as, of course, safe). They certainly also added to the “alpine feeling” of our ascent and as the weather got better and better as the hours passed, I think we had just about the perfect day in the mountains. Striding Edge and the initial descent alongside Swirral Edge were great fun though not terribly difficult, but we found it remarkable that a few people on the ridge only wore sneakers!
