Ascent Trip Report

After turning back a year before, just short of the summit when I was doing it with Kelly and Terry Lister, I went back determined to get it this time. The roads in were better than last year (no dust traps) but I knew I was racing a storm that did materialize after I got off of the mountain. When I drove to the end of the jeep track at 5500 feet, I was suddenly aware of the cold wind that was blowing. I followed the same route as the year before but this time I ran into snow in the upper reaches, more than I realized I'd find. I remembered what Brad Boester had said about snow conditions and being alone I was as careful as I could be. It wasn't going to get me to turn back however and I found a way but was more bothered by the wind which would gust at times. Fortunately I had warm gear and microspikes. With the summit covered in snow and the wind chill factor to deal with, I made it a quick time on the summit. I didn't dig the register out nor make any of my usual cell calls. It was a "touch and go" as in airplane jargon. The descent was fortunately uneventful and a bit faster than I normally move. Not long after I made it out to pavement, a storm nailed the area and rather than car camp as I had planned to do, I grabbed a warm motel room in Winnemucca and a pizza at Shakey's. My plans for Slumbering Hills the next day were cancelled when I got up in the morning and saw standing water alongside the road from the storm and I headed back home. Nice to get the peak but a long drive for just one. Normally this is a hike that could be combined with another nearby peak such as Adam, Hot Springs Mountain or Slumbering Hills.
