Ascent Trip Report

Now that I'm an ADK 46r, I've got my eyes on becoming a NE115r. In the meantime, I thought I'd start in the Catskills to bag the peaks I need and consider becoming a 35r (us hikers love patches).

This hike was my debut in the Catskills: Wittenburg, Cornell and Slide. I hiked this with Hudson Valley Hikers and we spotted cars so the overall hike was just over 10 miles with about 3,600' of gain.

The weather this winter hasn't been great, there were some slippery conditions early so I wore microspikes for the entire hike. As we ascented, there was a layer of ice everywhere under 2 - 4" of warm snow which kept forming clumps on the spikes. It had snowed early and the clouds didn't fully burn off, but there were periods of sunshine and it was cool seeing the low clouds come and go throughout the hike. Here's a brief description of each peak:

Wittenberg: This hike started climbing right away. It was the longest approach at 3.9 miles with several fun scrambles. It was slippery but crampons would have been to much.

Cornell: This was a fun hike!!!! There were a few scrambles as we approached the infamous crack. Lucky for us, we found another couple who had a rope. He scrambled to the top, secured the rope and we all used it to climb. There were no hand holds at all as everything was ice!!!! It was fun though...

Slide: This was quite the steep ascent!!! There were a few scrambles and we came across another "crack" where we needed the rope. It looked like there might have been a trail off to the left but it was completely covered in ice and difficult to climb. The descent on the other side was very easy, not anything like the hike up to that point.

Overall, I LOVED the challenge of this hike!!!! It was a fun and exciting hike with some very interesting views and the beauty of hiking in fresh snow. All the snow on the tree branches was so pretty and enjoyable to hike through.
