Ascent Trip Report

Booked permits online 5days in advance - we got the last 4, they sell out fast, but even if they are sold out keep checking, sometimes more availability appears. We hiked the Salkantay trek without a guide (highly recommend), then hiked up to Macchu Picchu from Aguas Calientes early in the morning (nothing to recommend about this rip-off tourist town, better to stay at the municipal campsite near the bridge across the river to Macchu Picchu). After spending a few hours wandering around Macchu Picchu getting soaked by the heavy rain we made our way to the entrance to Huayna Picchu. After queueing up for a short time, showing our permits & signing the book we started the hike up, surrounded by clouds. We summited in just over 30minutes, taking the route from the first mirador crawling through a cave, then up to the summit rocks, where we spent a couple of hours waiting for the clouds to clear. They eventually did & we had a spectacular view of Macchu Picchu & the surrounding mountains, free from all the tour groups. If you go to Macchu Picchu you need to do this hike.
