Ascent Trip Report

This is part of a one push 50 mile loop going through Passaconaway to Tecumseh and the Osceolas and going through all the NHHH summits on the way. I also included the Scars but didn't have enough time to do them and my distance calculation were pretty off since it would have taken over 60 miles. I made sure to really step on all the summits and even came back on my steps were I missed it.

I wanted to avoid doing too much of the highway at the end since it's very boring and I wouldn’t be able to run so much at the end, so started at Lily Pond and ran/walked to Oliverian trail. The goal was to hit Passaconaway at sunrise and finish the last Osceolas at sunset. Day is short and there would be light from 7am to 4pm. Average temperature was 32F, snow pretty much everywhere and avoidable ice on the summits. I had micro spikes but never used them, however I’ve used my poles extensively.

Everything went well and I had plenty of energy until the base of Osceola. I didn’t know if Osceola’s trailhead would be easy to find, so I pushed hard to climb Tecumseh in under an hour. Because of this, I bonked pretty hard and my speed suffered a lot.

I didn’t eat much, 6 chocolate bars and 8 dates. Pack was about 10 pounds including food and 2L water. I had a filter straw, spikes, down jacket, eVent pullover, headlamp w/ extra battery, sat phone, cell phone, USB charger battery pack, 1 pair of socks, safety blanket, fenix watch. That’s about it.

Most orienteering was done using map and compass, GPS points on the watch for Fool Killer and Scaur. I had made a plastified map that I carried in my pants ready to look at any time and it helped me correct mistakes very fast. The bushwalks to The Fool Killer and Scaur were pretty easy. No path to Fool Killer but it wasn’t too dense. The top was nice. Scaur had some blowdowns but there was a good herd path. I almost ended up going the wrong way had I not looked at my compass. The Sleepers area was pretty awesome, major blowdowns all opened with a chainsaw. I did two other bushwalks, one towards Tecumseh to cut directly the Tripoli road towards the ski area. I ended up on an electric line path that was easy to follow. I also 1 mile at the end to skip the wavy highway path and save 5 miles. This one was very rough, but I think it cut a lot of road. Had I been able to run, I think the road would have been much faster. So here are the splits.
