Ascent Trip Report

From Hwy 1 just south of Monterey, turn on to Caramel Valley Rd and follow it to Tassajara Rd. Follow this road past the national forest boundary and White Oak campground to the locked (or not) gate. It was snowing when we arrived. In spite of the wet, muddy road, the mighty Yaris made it all the way up to the highest trailhead! We parked there and made the short walk to the lookout tower. No packs even needed for this one! The high point is clearly the lookout tower, not the random point to the north and certainly not the observatory to the south. We found a set of keys on the ground right near the lookout tower and noticed that they were Toyota keys. There was a Toyota Tacoma parked at the intersection with us, so we picked them up with the intent of taking them to the other car. As we waked to the observatory, we encountered a guy in a blue Toyota Tacoma driving out. I waved him down and it turns out that he lost those keys up there a week before. Good luck! We walked around the observatory and its plethora of chairs and picnic tables.
