Ascent Trip ReportA wonderful, short day hike with superb Sierra views, Mitchell Peak is a real gem. The hike is about 5.8 miles R.T. with 2,300' of gain. To reach the Marvin Pass TH (8,100'): From intersection of CA 180 and Generals Highway drive south 6.7 miles to Big Meadows Rd, then 10.1 miles, crossing Boulder Creek and passing the Horse Corral Pack Station (8.9 miles)to the well signed Marvin Pass dirt road, then right 2.7 miles to the Marvin Pass TH. In the first half mile from the TH the trail passes the spur connection to the upscale Sequoia High Sierra Camp. Switchbacks then lead to Marvin Pass (1.3 miles from TH) The trail to Mitchell Peak goes left, while the trail to Rowell Meadows heads downhill. After 0.8 miles from Marvin Pass, the signed Mitchell Peak Tr turns uphill to the crest of the long ridge. In the last 0.8 mile from the junction the trail climbs moderately along the north side, breaks out into the open, then leaves the hiker to wend his way through a small boulder strewn area to the summit. Mitchell Peak once was home to a fire L.O. Memorable views on this beautiful day of the Sierra, particularly Mt.Goddard, Mt. Clarence King, Mt. Brewer.
