Ascent Trip Report

We started at the trailhead at the end of Sunset Drive on the north side of Tillamook Head. The trail goes up steeply via many switchbacks, and at the first we found it to be rather muddy, like walking in a narrow ditch between dense brush. Much of the ascent was on switchbacks where a recent windstorm had blown many trees down, so we had to climb over logs and fight our way through limbs. At one point a mudslide had taken out about 50 feet of the trail, so we simply climbed up and around it. When we got near the top of the ridge there was a cold breeze. We closed in on the gps coordinates to find the summit, which isn't obvious--i.e., you could walk right by without really noticing it. Continuing south, the ridge gets very narrow and you begin to get views of the ocean, the lighthouse, etc. Hiking out to Ecola State Park was a long but pleasant downhill walk, prettier the farther south you go, with especially great views of Indian Beach. Mostly the hike is a typical march through ferns and trees, etc., some of them huge.
