Ascent Trip Report

Mt. Flume marked the southern end of my 5-mile hike above treeline along the spectacular Franconia Ridge Tr from Mt. Lafayette, crossing over Mt. Lincoln, Little Haystack, and Mt. Liberty en route. I climbed Mt. Lafayette (10:15 AM) on the Greenleaf Tr with a brief stop at the Greenleaf Hut(2.15 miles, 4,200'). From Mt. Flume I left the Franconia Ridge Tr and descended the sometimes steep and slippery Flume Slide Tr, finishing near The Flume on NH 3 (3.7 miles,4:30 PM). A brief but heavy downpour near the bottom required caution. Lots of thunder--unaware of any lightning. I was lucky to hitch a ride quickly to the car at the Greenleaf Tr TH. Total hiking distance: about 12.5 miles.
