Ascent Trip Report

I was up in LA for two days to take care of some stuff, so when I finished a bit early on Tuesday, I opted to avoid spending hours in traffic going back to Vista and instead bag peaks in the Baldy area. I raced up to the Baldy ski lift trailhead and was walking a few minutes before noon. I had originally planned on doing this group of peaks 2 or 3 separate trips. The initial plan was to go up Thunder and Telegraph and call it a day. Well, I was on top of Telegraph in 1 hour and 45 minutes, so I opted to continue onward to Timber and then descend via Icehouse and walk back up the road to the car. Once on top of Timber, I realized how close Cucamonga and Etiwanda were, so I went for them. I also realized that it would be a shame to skip Bighorn, Ontario, and Sugarloaf. Well, I ran out of daylight to grab everything, but 7 of 8 for a noon start was not too shabby. If it had been light enough, I would have gone for Sugarloaf, but I opted to skip the large amount of off-trail hiking in the dark and play it safe on the trails. None of the peaks were in any way difficult, and there are trails or use trails up all of them. It was breezy and cool for the whole hike. The good weather, combined with excellent trails and amazing scenery with the moving clouds made this one of the best southern California hikes I have done to date. I reached Bighorn before sunset and Ontario just after sunset. I put on the headlamp on the summit of Ontario for my uneventful descent. Once I reached Icehouse Canyon TH, I made the turn up to the Baldy ski lift trailhead. 3 different cars passed me with my thumb out - no luck. Oh well, I'm a white male in my 30's which means serial killer profile... I made it back to the mighty Yaris at 10:55pm, 5 minutes ahead of my prediction and 1 peak short of my goal. Sugarloaf is a bump on the side of a real peak anyway... The drive home was topped off with a late dinner in Temecula to satisfy my voracious appetite after a long hike.

GPS notes:
The battery died 2 or 3 times during the hike and I left the spares in the car (another reason to skip a nighttime ascent of Sugarloaf), so there are breaks in the track. The final battery death occurred as I was hiking up the Baldy road, so I drew it in after the fact on the computer. It shows up a different color on my computer as a result. I just added it so that I could get an accurate mileage check. I did indeed hike that portion, I just added the track later, not that a future hiker needs a gps track to follow a paved road! As another note, I would do this hike in reverse, beginning at Icehouse Canyon, but first driving a bike to the area near the Baldy lift area so that you could ride downhill to your car. This would also mean skipping Sugarloaf or doing Sugarloaf with all the off-trail portions on the uphill section vice the downhill section. Another option would be to make a friend and do a car shuttle... Pics of what was one of the most beautiful SoCal hikes I have done to date!
