Ascent Trip Report

I felt like I was in Kansas when I drove up to the monument atop of Mount Sunflower - hot and dry in September, cow shit all around, no one for what looked like miles; I loved it. This has to be the quirkiest highpoint in the US, with a sunflower monument (alongside a grave) adorned with bicycle chains and old car parts. Beside the monument is a little fenced and roofed in picnic table sponsored by the local library, with a cabinet and dozens of books - for guests to take or leave. I was tempted to stay here and hang out, maybe have a beer and wait for the cows to come join me, but I had to leave time to go to the Nebraska highpoint that day (and I'm glad I left lots of time), so I left the owner a beer in the registry mailbox, signed the book (which is quite full), and continued west.
