Ascent Trip Report

gorgeous high pressure sunny day. wind 15 mph gusting on summit. ascent route up Huntington Ravine. this is a boulder route, just watch for correct trail and follow map. The ascent route has had accident reports especially those chosing to descend it. It crosses slabs below the obvious notch, and is not a class 1-2 hike as some ratings show.! plan for some class 3+ moves and a couple of class 4, though you have route choices if the class 4 gets too much exposure for you. thus, you do have lateral moving choices. There are yellow painted markings on rocks starting at bottom of upper boulder field(above the large blocks of boulders. I chose to follow the painted markings and found it worked well for me. Descent route I chose was Tuckerman because I didn't want the downclimbing especially across the slabs. It was also quicker. Don't try to park and sleep in car at a TH for night! or any TH at least in this part of National Forest. this is a corridor of White Mtn National Forest where its not legal. Also, the Mt. Washington State park encompasses this area with a large no backcountry camping zone so tried the rented SUV. Got caught trying to park and sleep in back of SUV. Went to Wallmart Gorham instead ! only place around at 10pm at night. Back to the scramble, water plentiful on route. summited in 4 hours 20 min. Descended in 2 hours 30 minutes. excellent views. no one on Huntington Ravine route on the ascent on a Friday before labor day weekend, which gave you lots of solitude I am used to.
