Ascent Trip Report

Long bushwhack to upper rainy lake -- Stayed high on the ridge and had a lot of brush bashing and very steep dirt slopes to deal with. Next time would try to find a path down lower and hopefully avoid some of the brush and rock walls.

After the lake, we crossed over the ridge SW of the basin and ran into more very steep dirt slopes around 5400'. Tried to find another path to traverse and couldn't come up with anything less steep. Decided to call it off due to running out of time and water.

Thoughts for next time:
- Start earlier (or camp at Rainy Lake overnight for a more leisurely summit push).
- Bring water filter.
- Route descriptions all say route-finding is easier after the upper lake. The route on my topo map seemed to indicate we were on the right side of the ridge, but ascending on the other side inside the basin looked much easier. Other TR photos seem to bear this out.
