Ascent Trip Report

This is probably one of the easiest major summits in Montana to climb. A popular and well-trodden trail runs from the busy Fairy Meadows campground to the crest of the range, and a spur trail leads south up the gentle dome of the summit. It is a very popular hike on summer weekends.

This hike was for us a somber occasion for us--earlier this morning we had attended a memorial service for Edward Earl, who had perished in Alaska recently on a climbing trip. His brother, his nephew, and five of his Seattle-area hiking buddies made this trip to scatter some of his ashes from one of the beloved mountaintops he had ascended.

We got a very late start, but the weather was stable--hazy, hot, and humid, with poor air quality due to forest fire smoke. 6-year old Devin did very well to make this hike with no problems. We had the summit to ourselves due to lateness of the day, with only mountain goats nearby. We got back to the car just before dusk.
