Ascent Trip Report

Another early morning ascent on a family holiday to Tirol. Leaving our hotel in Seefeld I drove south then up the Sellrainertal. The road was undergoing major repairs during summer 2015 and it was already 7am by the time I parked. The start is easy to find, between the villages of St Sigmund and Kühtai there are 2 tunnels with a short distance in between, and a parking lane runs for much of the distance in between. Near the west end of the parking a sign indicates Rietzer Griesskogel. The route is simple to find (red-white markings and signposts at path junctions) and I was already on top around 9.30. The view is good as can be expected, in particular looking down almost 2200 vertical meters to the Inn valley and across the valley the pale coloured wall of the Wetterstein mountains with the Zugspitze just poking its head up over the top. The initial km or so of path is somewhat boggy (even on a hot dry summer´s day) so in descent I followed the road which descends on the west side of the small stream (the path is on the east side, the crossing was simple). It may be this is even the more common variant as there is parking beyond the second of the 2 tunnels. It was also easy to get back to my starting point by walking along the roof of the tunnel and descending a little maintenance path at the end. Please note GPS track recorded only in ascent (batteries ran out). I was back at the hotel just after midday in good time for lunch with the family.
