Ascent Trip Report

Tried to ask permission to access the peak from the SE, but the local landowner wasn't home. Went around to the NE and parked as close as I could get, near a trailer and some piles of junk. There were a few mobile homes scattered in the area, but I couldn't figure out whom to ask permission from, as there was only one no trespassing sign near the entrance to the trailer park. As luck would have it, I stumbled onto a trail after about 10 yards of bushwhacking, and this trail took me along a property line to a corner next to a stone wall. After a 90 degree right hand turn, the trail took me straight to the summit. There is a small cairn in the trees, and a ramshackle camp with a fire ring and empty beer cans and wine bottles strewn about. After I returned along the trail, I came out of the woods to find a pickup truck waiting for me. Inside it was the owner of the property, and we chatted for a bit as he just wanted to get to know who was hiking on his land. Apparently, they have an unofficial firing range in the area, and him and his kin like to unload a few rounds from time to time, and this wouldn't be the best area to be walking in the woods if they just decided to start shooting. He says he would welcome hikers any time, but it would be best to get permission first. Owner's name is Lance, and he lives at 321 Switch Road in Canaan Center. The local name for this peak is Raven Hill.
