Map: Freytag & Berndt Hiking & Leisure Map (Double-sided) - La Palma, contoured, covering whole island. 1:40k also available.
Stats: 5mH, 20m
Time: arrive 16:40, ascent 5 mins.
Start: car park adjacent to summit. Elev c 2415m
Route: short walk from car park.
Difficulties: Summit pinnacles, c 5m high, are out of bounds, and involve a scramble, on good holds. Best undertaken when summit deserted. We arrived during snowfall, resulting in slippery roads above 2,000m and some anxious moments on steeper sections of road, but at least we had it to ourselves. We understand that the summit temperature was –4C and road was closed the next day; also that such conditions and temperatures are unusual even in winter.
The last mile is along the observatory road, open to vehicles between 07:00 and 20:00. Vehicle lights apparently banned at night due to observatory.
Triangulation point: at far end of summit car park, standard cylindrical column on tall square plinth. Standard elliptical metal plaque on front face of plinth, step irons on back face. Plinth not ascended due to poor conditions.
Notes: Island highpoint of La Palma. Several big astronomical telescopes near summit (equal largest in world). Spectacular caldera but we saw nothing, due to weather.
Climbed during a 1 week package holiday from the UK, during which we also visited the HPs of Tenerife, El Hierro and La Gomera.
