Ascent Trip Report

From NNE, Juvasshytte. We had driven up from Oslo the previous day, bagging Søre Svartkampen on the way. Arrived mid evening. Nice hut, good food served til 9pm, not cheap, but this is Norway. Lovely sunny evening, summit visible from Hut, as is its near twin Glittertind.

Breakfast is good although 0730 seems oddly late. We hike at 0830. 1km on good albeit rocky trail overtaking several parties. 1km on snow and boulder field then we rope up for glacier. We use crampons although mostly folk don't and really not needed. Glacier very benign with no crevasses on or near trail but no one seems to go unroped. Far side of glacier we reach a rock ridge, steep with a fixed rope at one point but easy ground and only YDS1. A little more snow crossed and final ascent is on snow, steepish but we don't need to put crampons back on.

Summit has a small hut and a good view finder, with pointer and even a small telescope. Some impressive peaks to south and southwest, the best looking being Skagastolstinden. Also a couple of items which could be trigs: a kind of bolt and a steel rod. Just four other climbers up here. They say there will be 500 people up here today. Already we can see large guided groups on the glacier and we pass them on the way down, about 300, 25 to a rope. This would be an easy way to bag the peak, cost 200 NOK per head. Also a few smaller family parties.

Once off the glacier we descend direct to the ski centre and take the paved road along the lakeshore back to Juvasshytte. 2h30 up, 4h30 round trip with a fair bit of stoppage time. A nice route with great views.

We next head for Snøhetta with Blåhøe as a drive up en route.
