Ascent Trip Report

This was the second attempt on Mount Isto we made on our expedition. Starting from the Jago river, we ascended the valley of "Trident Creek" and followed it to a large snowfield and glacier that allowed easy passage to the Okpilak drainage. We then crossed a large snowy bowl, descended 1200 feet, and climbed most of the way up the large snowy NW face of Mount Isto. This route, while technically easy, was a very long and roundabout trek from our high camp in the Jago drainage.

We turned back at about 8150' due to icy conditions, lack of proper crampons, a white-out snowstorm that enveloped the peak, the lateness of the day, and the distance we had come from our camp. Our summit day was a 17-hour epic with 7000' of total gain over 13 miles round trip and featured lots of postholing in soft snow for much of the route.

With good weather, good snow conditions, and a high camp in the Okpilak River valley, this route would be an easy climb.
