Ascent Trip Report

What an excellent mountain! Drove up the morning of the hike so we didn't start until 1pm or so. Took off from the Underhill state park campground and ascended via the CCC road to the Maple ridge trail. MP trail was a great ascent with various scenic views and some quality scrambles. Some tundra and alpine terrain starts near the top where it meets the Long Trail at the Forehead. We stopped here and had some lunch. We all agreed that the ridge hike from the Forehead, nose, upper lip, lower lip, and then to the high point, the Chin, was the best part of the day and we thoroughly enjoyed the ridgeline views and alpine environment. We sat around at the chin for awhile enjoying the summit success and vistas. We inadvertently stayed too late and descended the last 2 hours with headlamps in the dark, but now I feel this is the proper way to do things as the actual sunset we viewed over lake champlain from the sunset ridge descent was beautiful. I would fully suggest to anyone making this hike - do it in the afternoon/evening and descend Sunset ridge trail at sunset. I'm glad we descended sunset ridge as the maple ridge side would have been rather difficult in the dark going downhill.
