Ascent Trip Report

My first Washington State county high point! 1000x greater effort than the Florida CoHPs I tagged last month.

Followed Mr. Slayden’s topo and Mr. Helman’s route and coordinates. Drove straight on Wynoochee River road, along the east side of the lake until it turns into NF 3212 then fork right for 3213. The end of the road is now much further uphill than in prior TRs. And it looks like they will continue it further yet since there was earth moving equipment at the end of this newly cleaned up gravel road. In my stock 4runner I was able to drive up to an elevation of about 2400 ft cutting lots of time off the hike but it was a pretty bumpy ride to get to that spot.

Followed the road until it peters out at a steep drop at 3500 feet. Backtracked and turned up through the brush heading East and Northeast. No trail from here onwards. Traveled through the basin mentioned by others. Did some routefinding and attempted a gully but it became too steep and sketch and I backtracked. Found a different gully. Kudos to the guys who summited this one in winter.

At the top there were some pretty sketch moves to be doing solo, with no cell phone reception. Super steep hiking/scrambling up loose debris – leaves, moss, rock… Like prior peakbaggers, I used lots of vegetation for aid on both the way up and down. A fall would have made for a long tumble.

Finally peaked out on Peak 4920. Didn’t go for 494. Great views all around of the Olympics. A few distant peaks still had snow but most were bare. Returned the way I ascended and tagged the high point for Grays Harbor County before heading downhill and driving West to camp at Ocean Shores. Car to car in just over 5 hours.
