Ascent Trip ReportOn I-40 I took exit 53 at the small town of Thoreau and proceeded N on NM-371. Mile posts conveniently start at 0 here. At mile 8.5 the highway goes through a small pass near BM 7481. Just after mile post 10 and before a house on the left, I turned left onto an unpaved road, which is unsigned on NM-371 but identified as Navajo 50 after you are on it. After about 6 miles, I parked at a saddle at 8300' on the border between sections 4 and 5 and Earlized the remaining 500' gain to the summit. Nav 50 is passible by any street-legal vehicle, but there is a short section of ruts along the road in which a low clearance vehicle may get stuck if the driver is not careful.
The summit area has several radio facilities. The highest natural ground is a partly covered rock outcrop just past a brown corrugated metal shack and before a large steel tower.
