Ascent Trip ReportMatt and I did this one from the top of the tram on Hidden Peak. Since it was a winter ascent, we couldn't approach the peak from the ski area on either side. We were hardly backcountry experts at this time. Luckily for us, Baldy and Sugarloaf are more of "sidecountry" areas of Snowbird and Alta. Since this was long before we knew about AT or telemark skis (or could afford them), we hauled up our incredibly heavy alpine skis and boots in our full backpacking packs while walking up in regular leather boots and with snowshoes. We first snowshoed up Baldy, skied down to the saddle, then snowshoed up Sugarloaf, and then skied from Sugarloaf to the bottom of Alta ski area. From there, Matt stayed with our packs and skis and I caught the inter-resort bus to Snowbird to pick up the car. A lot of transitions between downhill skis and snowshoes (and the respective boots) for an ascent. Pictures
