Ascent Trip ReportDay 1: Jon dropped Keith and me off down at the trailhead up to the Hamongogs down in Utah County. This was the last human contact we had until we arrived at the Bells Canyon trailhead where Shirley picked us up. We hiked up to Lake Hardy and made camp on the snow not too far away. It took a good part of the day to get up there, though we did get a later start with the drive over to the trailhead.
Day 2: We headed up from Lake Hardy to Big Horn first. There were some cliff bands to navigate, but it is pretty easy going. The same is true as we descended the west side of the peak. We then began the long trudge up Lone Peak's east ridge to the eastern (false) summit. The traverse from the false summit to the real summit was a very dicey traverse on a steep snow slope. Since it was Keith's birthday, I gave him a cool fleece hat for climbing on the summit of Lone. The traverse back was almost as dicey, but we had out foot tracks to follow back. The runout for the slope ends at the top of a cliff dropping into Bells Canyon, so don't slip. Good thing we had our ice axes. From just above the low point between Lone Peak and Big Horn we slid down the snow to about the level of the pass between South Thunder Mtn and Big Horn and traversed across the the pass. It saved a re-climb of Big Horn and got us back to camp at Lake Hardy at a decent time for dinner.
