Ascent Trip ReportMedicine Butte is the obvious broad, conical summit that rises several miles north of Evanston. It is visible most of the time from the last 10 to 15 miles as you approach Evanston from Salt Lake City on I-80.
The highway guide signs in Evanston are somewhat confusing. The easiest way is to take exit 5 off of I-80, which puts you onto WY-89, which you should follow N through the center of town. From business 80 it is 5.9 miles to where I turned right on Uinta county road 108. On the main highway, however, this road is prominently identified only as the way to the county landfill; it is not identified as CR-108 until after you turn onto it. It is briefly paved and then changes to well-graded gavel. The road heads all the way to the summit (a total distance of about 7 miles), but my name is Earl, so I parked after about 5 miles and hiked the remaining 1000' gain to the summit. The road is sometimes steep and rutted for the last mile, beginning at the saddle at 8000', and timid drivers without high clearance may stop here, but most drivers and vehicles can Martinize this one.
