Ascent Trip Report

Apparently, the gate leading into this area is locked all the way back at Stanley Gap in winter, so I had to jog and hike the full length. Too bad, as the road was in good shape and my Subaru easily could have driven at least to the water crossing at 1.8 miles. Beyond there, I didn't see any real places where high clearance was needed, although the road does get quite steep at times. After about 3 miles, and at about 3200', I cut to the right on an old logging haul road and ascended the drainage northeast of the peak. The road climbed 300' and I gained the ridge through nice, open woods. Made it to the summit at 1:06 on my watch, and headed over to Little Bald, then Rich Mountain. Made it to Rich 33 minutes later, then retraced my route back to the car. 3 hours total round trip, and about 11 miles. Note: the GPS track included is for my descent, where I got pulled east by the ridge off Big Bald and never used the haul road that was helpful on my ascent. Anything goes on the downhill, as the woods were open and there was a road below no matter where I came out. I highly recommend ascending on that northern spur, as the thorns weren't as bad.
