Ascent Trip Report

This was an excellent and memorable one. I'd been wanting to get up Round Mountain for a long time, and with the melt-line unseasonably high for January, figured it would be a good time to go for it. Jacob Smith, Lindsay Wallis and I left from Bellingham a little after 7. We headed up FR 18, getting to within about a mile of the turnoff for 1850 before being stopped by snow. We walked the road until we reached the trailhead, then turned into the forest and attempted to follow the New Round Mountain Trail. We were relatively successful, for the most part. The route was flagged occasionally, and we alternated between deep drifts, light snow, and bare ground. Going was relatively quick. Rounding the corner near the trail's end, the snow deepened and we looked up at the upper slopes of Round Mountain. I quickly scoped a route passing under the cliffs to climber's right, charging up the gully then traversing left to the summit area. We executed that route almost exactly as planned, with me breaking most of the trail as we made good time. Near the top we pulled out ice axes, both out of an abundance of caution and to give Lindsay some instruction, as she had never used an ax before. It was difficult going for most of this section, with some waist-deep post-holing to work through, but we persevered and reached the summit about four hours after departure (a little after 1 pm). We retraced our steps on the way down, arriving at the car a little after four. Overall, a top-quality ascent, with the only missing piece being views (we did get a few nice peeks through the fog into the North Cascades, but not many). A hard, rewarding day.
