Ascent Trip Report

Day 1

Left home at 4:30 am on Monday morning with Ava (dog) and headed for Hart's Pass. Patty, the dogs and I had been in to area a few years ago and climbed Osceola, Carru, Blackcap and Lost, but didn't get around to climbing Lago and Ptarmigan because we were whooped. After a few stops and some gas we arrived at the Slate TH at 9:15am, only three cars in the parking lot, one left while we were preparing to leave. We hit the trail at 9:45am, the weather was forecast to be great, but it had rained the night before and my feet were pretty soaked in no time walking down the valley. We hit the turn off for Fred's Lake at 12:30 and ate lunch on the go. Passed the lake, no one to be seen, and continued up to the pass at 1:45. We continued traversing under Osceola and Carru to the drainage coming down from the Carru/Lago col. We crossed to the East side of drainage to escape avalanche carnage and gained the rib leading to the summit ridge. A short easy traverse on the South side of the ridge to reach the summit of Lago at 4:40pm. Took some pictures and signed the register.

Ptarmigan was next, but I was feeling tired. I had read a TR mentioning a spectacular camp under the North face of Lago beside pt. 8207. I could see there was a nice little tarn and grass, so we headed that way, figuring we'd make camp and rest for a big day tomorrow. Descending the North ridge of Lago was very easy, just talus, very little snow which I didn't need to climb on. We descended down to the larger 7400ft. tarn, made camp, and enjoyed the breathtaking views and sunset. Mountain House macaroni and cheese, not so good...

Day 2

Woke up to stars and started moving around first light at 5:45am. We gained the saddle of the ridge North of pt. 8207 and ran the ridge around pt. 8165 (West side ramp) and over to Dot, arriving at 7am. Found a little film canister register with very few entries. Continued down the N.E. ridge of Dot towards the moonscape of Ptarmigan. We reached the top at 7:40am and hung out on top for about a half hour. Headed back to camp, arrived at 9:45am, packed up and left at 10:15am. We traversed talus/moraines under the North face of Lago, the glacier is pretty much gone, sad to see where it had recently sat on the slabs now being covered by loose rock. We managed to stay high and gained the Carru/Lago col easily without needing to touch the snow on the North side of the col (11:00am). Descended the drainage and eventually crossed back over to the East side of the drainage to follow game trails down into the forest and back to the trail. Stopped at Fred's Lake and Ava and I went for a quick swim. The last three miles to the car was unpleasant, I was tired and moving slower than usual. Made the TH at 6:00pm and drove home following a burger to go from Mondo, plus LOTS of Dr. Pepper.
