Ascent Trip ReportI had hiked Lassen several times during my youth as a YMCA camp counselor, but this was my time with my own son. He was 10 years old and this was his first real hiking. He loved it! And he caught the peak bagger bug and now accompanies me on many of my adventures.
The trail is a constant grade and fairly steep -- mostly above the tree line. Even in early season would probably be hot except for the constant breeze. Park Service calls it a 5 mile round trip. Not sure if that includes the scrambling over boulders to reach the weather station at the highest point, but it's worth the effort for the 360 degree view. Stupendous.
Eric and I descended into the caldera and had a snowball fight with the near-ever present snow.
Return was uneventful, but a cold beer from the trail head gift shop was very welcome!
