Ascent Trip Report

Patty, the dogs and I got a crack of 11:00am start from the house on Saturday after packing that morning, we would do far more driving than hiking today. Neither of us had been past the Leroy Basin turn off on the Phelps Cr. trail, so reaching Spider Meadows was a treat for us. We left the car at 3:30pm and made S.M. around 5:30, lots of people camping/hanging around/playing frisbee, etc. We kept moving, lots of waterfalls all around, we reached the Phelps Basin/Spider Gap fork and took the right into Phelps Basin. One couple camped in the lowest part of the basin, we continued up on the right of the creek to the flat area at 5800 directly below our ascent gulley, reaching camp at 6:30pm. Plenty of running water, lots of very friendly deer, no people.

Day 2 we were moving about 6:10am, climbing up the gully just above our camp, a really pleasant game/climbers trail leads up the left side avoiding the wet slabs. We decided to do the harder of the two first, Dumbell. Since we were climbing with the dogs we chose the class 3 option, rather than the standard fault to the notch (reportedly some 4th). Our gully was dumping a large pile of scree onto the snowfield. We boosted the dogs up the few steep steps they couldn't climb and then traversed over to the notch below the summit block, our first views of the summit of Dumbell looked hard. Our beta said exposed class 2, looked much harder from a distance. On top of Dumbell at 8:30am, great views of Glacier and our next peak. Back down the way we came, over to the notch and out onto the narrow ledge wrapping around the SE ridge of Dumbell. Down some easy snow to gain the very broad/gentle SW ridge of Greenwood. Summit of Greenwood at 10:30am. An old Boy Scout troop from Cashmere left an old tin on top of Greenwood, maybe the original? Headed back down to camp after lunch in the heather meadows above the falls, reached camp at 1:00. Packed up and back to the car a little after 4pm, wisely stopping for food at the 59er Dinner before the Sunday route 2 traffic suck before Sultan.
