Ascent Trip Report

Based on other reports, I thought this peak was going to be a 300' climb on a trail, so I decided to take my wife on a nice evening stroll while driving to LA after a pleasant day hiking around Big Sur. I didn't find any roads taking us close, but I did find a nice trailhead off South Bay Blvd to the southwest of the peak. There was a mtn-bikee trail to a rock-climbing area where a couple guys on ropes told us to follow the use trail straight up the slope to where it diverged into a few small trails near the top. This we did, arriving at what appeared to be the top as a cloud settled in around us, creating zero visibility. I had seen a rocky bump to the east on the way up, but assumed I was headed to the higher point. My mistake became apparent when I got home and checked my route, seeing a bump 0.3 miles to the east WAS a bit higher and, in any case, the named peak. Oh well. This was unfortunate, since I just about had to drag my wife through the scree interspersed with brush going up the steep slope, although the couple class 3 moves we did near the cliffs below to avoid a bit of it were fun. I was glad to have my GPS on the way down, not only to get below the fog, but also since the use-trail diverged in several areas. My wife also picked off a few ticks from my pants near the top, which reminded me of my intent to avoid going through this kind of brush where deer are likely to have roamed. I had us change ALL our clothes at the car and do a through tick-check. Luckily, it was already dark. Such is life given Lyme's Disease.
