Ascent Trip Report

Sugar and I team up with Tim Hutchings and his sons (Darrin and Nate) as they finished their 46! They only needed Iroquois to finish. We started at the Adirondack Lodge at 7:42am. We hiked in and passed a large number of hikers on our way up Wright. We arrived on top of Wright at 9:51am. The summit is totally clear with 360 views. Snapped some pic’s and then made our way to the crash monument. We then continued on up Algonquin. We arrived on top at 11:21am. There was a large crowd on top of Algonquin. We found the BM and took lots of pictures. We sat down to eat lunch and also talked to some of the other hikers. There was also a high peak ranger on top that we spoke with before we continued on to Boundary Peak arriving at 12:15pm. We continued on to Iroquois arriving at 12:40pm. Iroquois is also a bald peak with full 360 views.
After a short break we continued on down the south side of Iroquois to Shepard’s Tooth. The first .2 miles of this hike was ok but once we reached the tree’s the bushwhack was awful. The trees were so close and we did not bring a machete, if we did it would have made this hike much easier. We made it to Shepard’s Tooth in good time arriving at 1:19. We passed another hiker bushwhacking up Iroquois who was lost out in the brush. We choose to hike down what looked like a trail on the east side of the Tooth. We should have either went down the steep West Side or backtracked the path we took up to the small valley between the Tooth and Iroquois. Insteed we took this east side trail and after soon tough bushwhacking for 10 minutes came to a 15 foot drop off. Instead of turning back we worked our way down this drop and were committed to hiking down the east side. We worked our way through very heavy underbrush and very thick trees. We slowly made our way down the east side of the Tooth and encountered a number of ~10 foot drops along the way. We arrived on the Cole Brook trail at 2:41. We were all scratched up and tried. Sugar had soon much trouble walking with her leash on I had to carry her through most of the bushwhack.
If you plan to bag Shepard’s Tooth I recommend coming down the West side of the Tooth and when you encounter the 30 foot walk work your way back east toward Colden Dam till you find the crease in the rock that will allow you to get down the wall. Since we took the East side down we missed the rock wall altogether, but the bushwhack was horrible.
We took Cole Brook trail to Indian pass and then hiked the 5 miles back to Adirondack Lodge arriving at 6:26pm. This was a great hike with a nasty bushwhack. I finished the day with 21 NY high peaks!
