Ascent Trip Report

The trailhead is about 20 west of US 97 on OR 138, just before Diamond Lake. It is 3.6 miles to the PCT and another 1.3 to the summit. The trail goes up the west ridge, and is fine until about the tree line, but above that is is loose gravel/scree and lots of slipping and sliding. The easiest way is to stay on the rocks as much as possible. As you get nearer the summit the route goes around to the right, it is fairly obvious due to the sand in the rocks, although in spots there are a couple of routes. The summit spire is actually quite easy, with good holds and solid rocks, in spite of the rather intimidating first impression. It wasn't really as difficult looking or climbing as I had been led to believe from some trip reports on Summit Post. While the climb was fairly steep, it wasn't vertical and the exposure was minimal, in my opinion, and I am a cautious climber. There wasn't ever any time that I felt the need of using a rope. That said, I followed my friend Jason, who is younger and more experienced than I am, so I didn't need to do any route finding, but it was a very straight forward route. I did get a little turned around on top and confused about the way to go down, so check your bearings when you reach the top!

It was a nice partly cloudy day, not too hot, reached the summit in 2 hr. 43 min. Total time was 5:37 including breaks (about 20 min. on top), round trip. 9.2 miles according to Strava.
