Ascent Trip Report

I've wanted this one since my first visit to Crater Lake seven years ago. From a distance, it looks like a technical climb, but it isn't. It might be an easy climb for those accustomed to YDS 5+, but I rate this one of the most difficult scrambles I've done. It's not a walk up. The first 25 ft of the final pitch is probably 60 degrees. Thoughtful use of all four limbs required. The holds are solid, and you have all of them you need, but not a whole lot more. Wouldn't take much more difficulty to turn me around. A very fun and challenging scramble, but it's not for everyone.
Today, I saw most people headed first for the notch between the west and main summits. That's a very technical route. The standard route is on east side of the summit block. Keep heading to the right of the main summit until a slot leads you up onto the east shoulder, about 70 ft from the top.
Views from Shasta to Jefferson from the top. A little bit of haze in the valleys. Stepped on one patch of snow on the way up, and it had melted off the trail by my return. Cascade mosquitoes were out in full force in the morning; not too bad by afternoon.
Shared the summit with Pete, Alicia, and Michelle.
