Ascent Trip Report

Peak 3 – We started from the small town of Tjentiste in Bosnia and drove up a 17km dirt track through the hills to the trailhead of Maglic. This road is in very poor condition but we made it with little problem in the rental car (just take it slow). However, by the time we reached the start point of the climb the weather had deteriorated and we were once again in the middle of a thunder storm. We waited for an hour in the car but it did not let up so we were faced with a choice of sleeping up there all night and climbing first thing in the morning or going back down the track, finding a place to sleep and trying again in the morning - we opted for going back down.

The next day we tried again and drove the 17km track (1 ½ hrs) to the trail head. It was still raining when we set off but at least the thunder and lightning had stopped. The trailhead is located at 1650m, next to a small picnic area. We trudged through thick mud to the higher meadows following the markers and on to the foot of the mountain. There are some steeper sections here which have steel cables in place for protection. We reached the summit ridge and followed the path to a small section of rock just below the summit. A quick scramble up to the summit - but no view. We had been very lucky up until that point so shouldn’t complain. Now a day behind schedule, we needed to drive through to Croatia to reach our next high point.
