Ascent Trip Report

Since Tim and I finished Mt Hood at 9:45am and hung out using the bathroom and cleaning up gear in the parking lot for another hour or so, I still had lots of daylight left to bag more peaks! Options included a nearby CoHP - Buck Peak, and a peak that I have had my eye on for a while as a Hood add-on, Barlow Butte/Barlow Ridge. Well-named peaks I might add, and one is a P1k. I opted for the 5 minute drive from Government Camp to Barlow Pass vice the longer drive around to Lost Lake. Plus, I wanted to grab a late lunch / early dinner in Portland at a cool locavore/hipster/organic restaurant, so basically any restaurant in Portland. As a locavore Seattle snob living in lower Queen Anne, the prospect of trying out the locavore scene in Portland was alluring...

Since I was a 5 minute drive from the trailhead when I hit US-26 on my way down from Timberline Lodge, I opted to head for Barlow Pass to get on Barlow Road to hike up Barlow Butte and Barlow Ridge. This is one of the best-named places in Oregon!

There is a nice large parking lot for the PCT on a side road from Barlow Pass. I parked here (pass required, which I have). The trail is reached by walking a few hundred meters down Barlow Road to the trail (trail 670) that leads up Barlow Butte. The trail junctions twice on the way up, but it is well-signed. The trail up Barlow Butte seems seldom used, a shame really. It is beautiful Oregon forest! There is a use trail to the actual summit. Where the use trail branches off, the main trail continues south to Barlow Ridge, and is even less traveled. The trail goes right over the summit. Barlow Ridge has amazing views of Mt Hood, while Barlow Butte has more trees blocking the view. The return hike was uneventful, and I spent the time kicking sticks and branches off the trail in an attempt at keeping the trail a little better maintained as it goes to some wonderful peaks with truly awesome names.

I didn't see any people other than at the trailhead parking lot.

Stats (slower than usual for easy trail, maybe I was tired from Mt Hood...):
5.08 mi
2 hrs 3 min moving time
26 min stopped
2.5 mph avg moving speed
