Ascent Trip Report

Hike of 5-31-2014
First over-night hike of the summer. At 10:28 AM I left the house with the plan to hike two fire towers both in the Old Forge area of the Adirondacks. Traveling to Binghamton and then following Route 12 into Utica and from there Route 28 into the Adirondacks. I hadn't traveled this way, this far before.
Slow driving compared to the highway.
I looked for a place to lunch with the only requirement that is wasn't one of the standard fast food places and finally after going through Utica a spied a place that was open and had a lot of cars. I figure it was about 40 minutes before Old Forge. (Fried Chicken, Fries and Macaroni Salad) I ate the Macaroni Salad in the car and then hit the road, and nibbled the fries as I drove. At 2:17 I reached the trail head for Woodhull Fire Tower. (About 8 miles South of Old Forge) This was the long hike for Sunday and I wanted to scout the area so I could finalize the plan in my head. First I ate a piece of chicken. As soon as I got out of the car I was attacked by a cloud of mosquitoes. I tried making sense of a large map they had posted there but the bugs were so bad that they drove me back into the car. The car was full of them, how in the world was I going to sleep in here? I checked out the gate at the jeep trail, it was open, and left the trail head. Out on the road I headed for Old Forge and vented the car by opening the rear windows and lowering and raising the front windows to drive out the bugs. (it worked, except for a few that got smashed by me or were hidden in the wheel wells. By the time I reached the second trail head, this one to Bald (Rondaxe) Mountain about five miles North of Old Forge, there were only a few bugs that remained. It was now 2:40 PM I sat for a while and watched others, there were many, who had come to hike this easy trail. They did not seem to be under attack from the bugs, so shortly I was willing to extract myself from the safety I had gained. This was a 1.2 mile hike starting at 1946' at 2:57 I was in the cap of the tower 2300' at 3:28. I took a few pictures and with people everywhere I headed right down reaching the car at 4:08. The GPS gave me a distance of 2.45 miles.

I had been toying with the idea that I might visit Mary Lou and Richie in Indian Lake, about an hour from where I was presently. Since I had dinner, now, still sitting next to me I decided I had the time to make the visit, (hoping they would be home, of course) I reached there place at about 5:10 and finding Mary Lou in her garden (like, where else would she be) told her I had to be on the road again between 6:30 and 7:00 so I wasn't traveling in the dark on unfamiliar roads. It was a good but short visit and I managed to get out just after 7:00.

Driving back to Old Forge I decided that a good place to spend the night would be the trail head parking area of Bald Mountain. It was off the main road and relatively mosquito free, it was dusk when I pulled in just as the last car was leaving. Time to eat my chicken.
