Ascent Trip Report

We took Michael Schwartz's opinion and just decided to hike the southern point at the SUMMIT benchmark. We drove down Tower Road near sunset and came upon the start of the road to where the fire tower was in 1.9 miles. It is just after a better dirt road heads off south of the main road. We parked at the start of the road going north which is now closed to vehicle travel. It was a nice short walk up to the benchmark in a forest that has been logged, but still has evenly spaced trees standing alone. There was still some banks on the north side of the little hills. Decent views to the south and west, but there is unlogged forest to the north and east still. We went back to our cars and camped there for the night. We heard lots of bugs and maybe frogs making noise in the low areas. We also heard what sounded to me like a grouse making mating calls for quiet a long time. One other vehicle was in the area. This whole area is county owned forest, and if you want to access the north point there is a way to do it just on county land. The county owns the NW, NE, and SE 1/4 sections of Section 17 (the contour is in the NW 1/4 Section) and the E 1/2 of the SW 1/4 Section. Tower Road goes along the south edge of Section 17.
