Ascent Trip Report

We parked at the 4WD parking area and climbed up the southwestern large canyon on Black Butte. It was a great climb. Went up the canyon until we hit a large dry waterfall with smooth rock that is distinctively whitish in color. There are a couple of waterfalls before this large one. We went up and around to the left of the fall. This left route was steep and covered with loose rock, while doable one must use great caution. I would not recommend this route around the waterfall which did extend the climb's length and difficulty. We remained high until we got to the leftward, break-off canyon that goes to the peak ridge. On the way down from the peak we went via the same break-off canyon directly into the main SW, large canyon. When we got to the large dry waterfall we went to the opposite side of this fall (now on our left) and found a manageable use-trail that is a much better route around the fall. I know the DPS guide says to keep left on the main SW canyon, but I found sticking to the canyon and going to the right of the large fall to be the best route.
