Ascent Trip Report

2013-03-29: This popular hill is easily visited as there is a car park and cafe near the summit. However, the highest point, marked by a tall obelisk (trig pillar) is inside a military radar compound secured and guarded.

We looked into the possibility of visiting this isolated summit in a day trip from Lisbon, but as it seemed unlikely that we could reach the summit, we abandoned the idea and targeted Serra Mamede instead.

2014-04-21. After visiting we headed east to visit Foia. An interesting summit with a very nice approach drive. However, as we had anticipated, not tickable unless you enter the radar station.

We first investigated the tall trig pillar on the west summit within the radar base but of course couldn't reach it. We visited the rocky east summit, a cairn (N37.31742 W8.59114) by a mast, reached via a flight of steps. This appears to be very similar in elevation to the radar base summit, although viewing against the sea level horizon suggests the base of the big trig pillar is a little higher. It would be interesting to see a hand level analysis. 1:25,000 mapping has no 900m contour on the east summit, suggesting max 899m there, unless the contour is missing.

This completed our 4 day trip to Azores and southern Portugal and we returned to Lisbon for the flight home.
